FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Coinciding with the release of J. K. Rowling’s newest book, St. John’s Episcopal Church will have a special Harry Potter service on Sunday, July 17 at 9:30 am.
All children are invited to come to church dressed as their favorite characters from the Harry Potter series. Members of the parish will present a brief drama.
Dumbledore, Hagrid, Snape and Professor McGonagall will discuss the dilemma they have about whether there is a conflict between what is taught at Hogwarts and the teachings of Jesus. They are determined to avoid bad press!
St. John’s rector, the Rev. Dr. Guy Collins, participated in a similar service in London when Rowling’s first book was published. The Anglican Bishop came and took the part of Dumbledore. Dr. Collins wants to remind parents and young people that these stories are good because they teach moral lessons, and the choices that Harry Potter makes are always on the side of the angels.
“The church needs to appropriate and work with things that people know in order to communicate a richer Christian narrative,” opines Dr. Collins.
